Why do high-end cars adopt double wishbone or multi link suspension

Currently, most high-end car models in the world adopt double wishbone or multi-link suspensions rather than MacPherson suspensions. Although MacPherson is also a type of independent suspension, it inherently lacks restraint in its structure, resulting in poor performance under specific road conditions. This is one of the reasons why many car enthusiasts criticize the Lexus ES series. Although Huawei's Automotive BU President Yu Chengdong claimed at the launch event that the double wishbone suspension used in their cars is equivalent to that of million-dollar cars, which is somewhat misleading, objectively speaking, the advantages of double wishbone and multi-link suspensions are evident.

I. Basic Structure and Differences between Double Wishbone and Multi-Link Suspensions:

Double wishbone suspension, also known as double A-arm suspension, consists of two A-shaped arms and a vertical spiral shock absorber. The two A-arms share the task of absorbing the lateral force of the car body, providing excellent stability and accuracy, as well as the ability to withstand large tensile forces.

During design, double wishbone suspensions are often configured with a shorter upper arm and a longer lower arm. This ensures that when the car travels on rough roads and the wheels bounce frequently, the camber can be automatically controlled, improving tire grip. Multi-link suspension can be considered a variant of double wishbone suspension, where the upper and lower A-arms are separated. With multiple connecting rods, the suspension can provide more precise control and buffering, and the four connecting rods offer more adjustability. Therefore, multi-link suspensions offer better comfort and are also easier to install structurally.

II. Advantages and Disadvantages of Double Wishbone and Multi-Link Suspensions:

1. Double wishbone and multi-link suspensions are currently the best choices for balancing comfort and sportiness, providing better handling and grip. However, they also have obvious disadvantages. One is the high requirement for installation space, as the upper A-arm or two connecting rods occupy a large amount of space. Another is the high cost, which requires more expertise in design and tuning.

2. If the working environment is humid or watery, when dismantling and transferring the vulcanizing machine, it should be elevated with items on the ground to prevent direct contact with water.

In summary, various automotive suspension systems have their unique advantages and applicable scenarios. Consumers should weigh their actual needs and budget when making a choice. For example, those pursuing economy and simplicity can choose MacPherson suspension; those focusing on handling and ride comfort can consider multi-link or air suspension; while those pursuing an ultimate driving experience with sufficient budget can opt for electromagnetic suspension. In choosing an automotive suspension system, what suits you best is the best choice.
